Beyond Avogadro’s Number by Allan Bonsall

Project type: Book layout—cover only

Dimensions: 209 x 146 mm with 15 mm spine

The author of Beyond Avogadro’s Number was keen to see what images I could find that matched the environment of an 18th century physician and it just so happened that two perfect images were available online:

Desk in Governor’s Mansion—Colonial Williamsburg by JP McMann, Bonaparte visitant les pestiférés de Jaffa by Antoine-Jean Gros

Geckos Family Fun Centre Flyer

Project type: Full-colour, double-sided flyer

Dimensions: A5

Sign board graphics purchased from stock chosen for match with background art supplied by client. Standard Geckos fonts used. This was one of my first jobs for Geckos so I developed the brand manual for them by determining what fonts and colours had already been used by previous designers.

Geckos Family Fun Centre Party Invitation

Project type: Full-colour, double-sided flyer

Dimensions: A5

Striking colours and rounded boxes used per the brand style guide Greenslade Creations has developed for Geckos. Standard template for back side of flyer, simple and easy to read.

Geckos Family Fun Centre Pamper Party Invitation

Project type: Full-colour, double-sided flyer

Dimensions: A5

Pink and purple colours chosen to appeal to young girls and their mums for a princess-themed, girly, pamper party. This is a departure from the standard brand colours, but it is OK to do that every now and then. The brand style guide is meant to support design consistency not be too restrictive. We used the standard fonts and rounded boxes so there is some cohesion still.

FIXZIT Andy Robertson Thank You Card

Project type: Double-sided colour card

Starlight, Time and the New Physics by Dr John Hartnett

Project type: Book layout—interior only

Dimensions: 209 x 146 mm with 15 mm spine

This was a very challenging layout because of the huge number of complex mathematical equations, some of which were in line, in sentences. Others were figures, which was simpler. The in line equations had to be integrated into the layout from MathType, a plugin for Word, so we first went to Illustrator, then inserted them in-line so they would stay with the surrounding sentence and text.

The Singing Silence and The Winging Word by A.M. Hamilton

Project type: Book layout—interior only

Dimensions: 105 x 170 mm

The author of The Singing Silence was a mathematician and had pre-planned certain patterns into the layout—she supplied images that were to fill half of every second page. It was a fun challenge to have to make the text look right in such a small column. It was also necessary to balance the size and spacing so that diagrams would not be on a page half-filled with a colour picture.

Tahitian Noni International Catalogue

Project type: Full-colour, double-sided catalogue update

Worked with existing design preflight, updated text as requested, amended design in places, found some pics to fill spaces and aligned design features. Converted JPG, RGB and spot images to correct 300dpi CMYK .PSD and .TIF files for offset printing.

By Design by Dr Jonathan Sarfati

Project type: Book layout—cover only

Dimensions: 213 x 134 mm with 14 mm spine

The main images were chosen in conjunction with the publisher and the final composition of the front cover was made up of four separate images. The colour scheme was a natural progression and extension of the chosen images. I used the eye dropper tool in Photoshop to choose colours for the highlighted word "By" and the warm blue rounded boxes.
